For National Hobby Month we let staff take center stage in our book this week. The sensory groups explored boxes related to specific hobbies. The fine motor groups made art projects using techniques from some of our hobbyists and the language group made a tasty treat!

 

 

 

 

 

SENSORY GROUP

Ms. Trenisha collects elephants—-how cool is that! There were lots of different elephant items in this box including a hat, plush toys, and a discovery bottle with floating elephant beads.

 

 

 

There was also an accordion tube the students could use to form their own elephant trunks.

On Tuesday the students made a tissue paper collage on a paper plate!

First, they identified the shape of their paper plate.

Next, they tore colorful tissue paper into smaller pieces and glued them down on to their plates.

On Wednesday the students practiced their painting skills by painting with water! Thank you Ms. Jeannie for donating “paint with water” coloring books!

Next, the students dampened their paint brushes with water and began painting. It was so cool watching the paint appear!

Glue was added to the back of the picture—-we followed the shape of the paper reminding the students that it was a RECTANGLE.

Then they glued their picture on to a BIGGER rectangle!

LANGUAGE GROUP

We made yummy banana pudding parfaits this week in the language group.  Here’s the recipe that we used: Let’s Make Banana Pudding Parfaits

We started out by PUTTING instant vanilla pudding mix into a BOWL.  The student who HELPED was given the box of pudding mix.  If they were unable to open it, they requested HELP.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Once the pudding mix was in the bowl, we measured out 2 cups of milk.  We poured one carton of milk into the measuring cup and found that we needed MORE.  We found that 2 cartons of milk from the cafeteria equals 2 cups!

 

 

Math access point: solve problems involving small quantities of objects or actions, using language, such as enough, too much, or more.

 

 

 

 

Each student had a change to HELP MIX the ingredients up.  Since each student helped out, they were asked “who’s next” after their turn.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Next, we crushed up some vanilla wafers.  Each time a student was finished HELPING, we observed the bag to see if they needed to be crushed up MORE or if we were ALL DONE.

 

 

 

We adapted our glitter song and sang “crush your cookies instead of shake your glitter 🙂

 

 

 

 

 

 

Each student had to request a CUP.  Then they had to request the ingredients to build the parfait.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

First, they requested the crushed cookies.  We PUT some pudding on top of that and then added 3 slices of banana.  Each student counted out 3 slices.

Finally, we PUT some whipped cream on top.  Each student was only given a small amount, so they had to indicate whether they wanted MORE or they were ALL DONE.  When the parfait was all ready, they had to request a SPOON.

 

 

 

 

I think we can all agree with Ms. Brenda that cooking can be a very fun hobby 🙂

Watch Out For Monsters!

Watch Out For Monsters!

For our final October unit, we were inspired by the Scooby Doo series! The sensory groups explored boxes highlighting different villains of the series. The fine motor groups crafted some fun projects and the language group hosted a monster party!

 

 

 

 

SENSORY GROUP


There were all sorts of items to discover in this box. There were laminated and plush characters from the series, a treasure chest, plastic footprint, furry werewolf fur, and a vampire puppet.

 

 

 

Of course we included a voice output device with the Scooby Doo theme song!

There were four spooky bats to find in a box of black beans and rice. There were 2 white and 2 grey to compare and contrast.

The students used Mr. Potato Head and pumpkin accessories to turn make their own Frankenstein monsters in green Bubber.

Orange Kool-aid made the play dough not only look good but smell good too!

LANGUAGE GROUP

We had an eerily good time in our language group this week.  We decided to have a party and of course we invited all of the classrooms that participate in our groups to come along.

 

Some of the students and staff got dressed up in DIFFERENT costumes.  We didn’t have a parade this time, so everyone went straight to the party room.

 

 

 

 

 

 

We decorated the room with lots of different Halloween and monster decorations.

 

 

 

 

Students and staff also got to take pictures in front of the background for our book.  We had also props  🙂

 

 

 

 

 

 

Of course, we also had some snacks.  Students got to choose what they WANTED to eat.  There were sentence strips set out for each option they had: candy corn, marshmallows, chips, and cookies.

 

 

 

They could also choose to drink “bug juice” or “blue goo” (dressed up Gatorade).

 

 

 

 

 

 

The music got everyone in the mood to dance.

Green

Between the first day of spring and St. Patrick’s day, March is all about GREEN! Our sensory groups explored monochromatic boxes with lots of different textures. Our fine motor groups used green paint to complete their art projects and the language group made a tasty green treat!

 

 

 

 

 

SENSORY GROUP

This first box contained a variety of green objects including beads, a shaker pompom, plastic leaves, a toy lizard, shamrocks, and a cute green frog puppet.

 

 

 

 

There were lots of different things to explore!

Our green rice included some colorful contrasting beans. It was a very eye catching box with a real springtime feel! There were two different sized spoons for scooping fun.

We used a cut up green plastic file folder and hot glued it to the sides of a clear shoebox. The battery packs are attached to the lid with velcro.

LANGUAGE GROUP

Of course, we are making a GREEN treat for the language group.  This week we made green milkshakes using this recipe: Let’s Make A Green Milkshake

We started by TURNing the page to see the first step of the recipe.  Since it was ice cream, we let each student touch the container first and indicate that it felt COLD.  We talked about why it was cold as well and located the freezer.

Then we measured out 2 cups of ice cream and PUT it in the BLENDER.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We measured out a cup of milk and PUT that in the BLENDER as well.  We observed that there is one cup of milk in a container of school milk.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Next, we added some green food coloring.  Our students HELPed count out 10 drops.

Then we TURNed on the blender.  After each student, we asked if the milk shake was ALL DONE or if we needed to blend it some MORE.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Once it was all finished, we poured the milk shake into cups. Our students got to have some whipped cream and green sprinkles too.

Candy Land

Candy Land

Every kid’s favorite board game and perfect theme for the end of October—-Candy Land! The sensory groups explored boxes related to each of the characters in the game. The fine motor groups made candy inspired art projects and the language group hosted a Candy Land party. It was a super fun week!

Candy colored beans filled this King Candy box. There were letter K’s and C’s to find and match in this eye catching box.

Next, the students painted glue on to the circle. The lollipop stick was already attached so that made it easier for the students to hold.

We passed each color around so everyone got a little (or a lot) of each color 🙂

On Wednesday the students made mini Candy Land boards—-and put themselves in the game!

First, we looked at a real Candy Land game board and identified its shape. The students used communication devices, verbalization, or pointing to communicate their answer.

Each student got to choose a different colored strip of paper. Of course, we asked them to identify the color of their strip using communication symbols.

Then, they cut on the lines to make squares. The students used regular scissors, adapted scissors, or switch operated scissors to cut their paper.

We divided up the different colored squares among the students so the students could start gluing them down on their “game boards”. Adults drew a curvy guide line with a pencil.

Let’s Play Candy Land!

We decided to have a little party during the language group this week.  The students in the language group got dressed up as the characters in Candy Land for a parade.

 

 

 

We talked about who was in the FRONT of the parade and who was in the BACK of the parade.

 

 

 

 

We made our way all around the elementary building,

and the crowd was pretty entertained!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Then we all joined together to have a little Candy Land party!

Students were able to request what they wanted to eat using picture symbol sentence strips.  They had to indicate “I want _____” in order to get what they wanted: M&Ms, Trix, chips, or a drink.

 

 

 

 

If they were not given a lot at first, they had to request MORE.

 

 

 

 

We practiced our social skills with our friends while listening to Halloween music and eating our snacks.

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty

February 26 was national Tell a Fairy Tale Day so we chose one of our favorites, Sleeping Beauty! It also helped that we had costumes to go with the story 🙂 The sensory groups explored boxes related to different characters in the story. The fine motor groups used cardboard to make their art projects and the language group made a fairy tale inspired tasty treat!

 

 

 

 

SENSORY GROUP

There were some magical things to find amongst the sprinkled silk leaves and flower petals in this box. We included some princess and fairy figures in addition to some woodland animals. One of the birds included made authentic chirping sounds.

 

 

The real hits of the box were the tiara, knights helmet, and lighted magic wand—-the students really had fun with these!

Pink rice seemed perfect for Sleeping Beauty’s box. There was a picture of the princess herself to find at the bottom of the box and letters S and B to scoop up.

With all the fairies in this story, we thought some magical fairy lights would be a perfect addition to our boxes this week. In addition to the colorful lights, we added some silver tinsel to give it extra sparkle. It was pretty cool looking, especially when we turned off the lights!

On Tuesday we made some fairy wands! We pre-glued cake pop sticks to cardboard stars.

We had lots of fun making our wicked Maleficent smoothies this week during the language group!  Here is the recipe that we used: Let_s Make A Maleficent Smoothie

We started out by each of our students touching the bag of frozen blueberries.  They indicated that the blueberries felt COLD.

We measured out a cup and had a student request to HELP put them in the blender.

Next, we put a cup of frozen mangoes in the blender.  Since we had felt the frozen blueberries, we asked the students what they thought the frozen mangoes would feel like, and again, they had to indicate COLD.

We added some vanilla Greek yogurt to the blender next.  Each time we talked about WHERE we were putting the ingredients.  The students would either verbalize BLENDER or they would indicate it on their communication board.

 

Finally, we added some milk to the blender.

 

 

 

 

After all of the ingredients were in the blender, we had our students predict what color they thought the smoothie would be once the ingredients were all blended up.  Then, each student got to help turn the blender on using a wireless switch.

 

 

Recognize that electrical systems must be turned on in order to work is a science access point.

 

 

 

 

It took a lot of mixing but once the ingredients were ready, we counted out how many cups we needed for our friends and poured some smoothie into 6 cups.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

But we weren’t done yet!  We wanted to add some green to the purple smoothie to represent Maleficent’s face.  We put some cool whip into a bowl and added some green food coloring.  Our students helped count out 5 drops.  Then we watched as the white cool whip turned green.

We added some of the cool whip to each of the cups and then each student had to request that they WANTED a smoothie to DRINK.

Monsters in Movies

Monsters in Movies

We had so much fun with this unit! Our book is awesome and the students had a great time dressing up as different characters so be sure to check it out. Our sensory groups explored boxes related to different movie monsters. The fine motor groups made some monster art projects and the language group conducted some monster experiments!

 

 

 

 

SENSORY GROUP

To set the mood, we turned off the lights and brought out our Hotel Transylvania umbrella. It had orange lights, ghostly garland, and some little bats. The students loved it!

We filled this “monster” box of black and red paper shred with figures, finger puppets, a plush Scooby Doo, and a great BIG squeaky rat! The students rocked out to The Monster Mash recorded on a voice output device. Lots of things to look at, touch, listen to, and explore!

For our Frankenstein box we used green Floam and then added Mr. Potato Head pieces and some laminated props we made. The students came up with some monstrously  cool creations!

Bubber is a great molding substance, perfect for making Scooby snacks! The students could use the bone shaped cookie cutter or just mold the Bubber into whatever shapes they liked.

The character Mal, from The Descendants, has purple hair. We decided our purple kinetic sand would be PERFECT for this box. We included a heart shaped scoop that could be used for a mold and a little rake. The students used pieces cut from black craft foam to turn shaving foam into ghosts. Messy fun as usual.

On Tuesday the students made some monster masks using this: monster mask

We asked the students to choose which marker they wanted to use first. We took a cue from the colors of Sully from Monsters Inc. and used the colors BLUE and PURPLE.

On Wednesday we made some paper bag mummies! We found the idea on Pinterest.

We asked the students to use their black markers to draw ACROSS lines on the bag. Then they glued a strip of torn black paper at the TOP of the bag.

Next we squeezed 2 glue dots on the black piece of paper and asked the students to put a googlie eye on each dot.

                                                    It’s a Mummy Monster Mash!

 

 

 

 

 

LANGUAGE GROUP

This week, instead of making yummy treats, we put together some pretty awesome monster experiments.  Here are the ones that we used with the directions: Let_s Do Monster Experiments!

Since the pumpkin was cut beforehand, we had the innards of the pumpkin in a bag.  We passed it around so our students could feel what the insides of pumpkins are like. Since it had been in the fridge it also felt COLD.

We started out by making an Erupting Pumpkin.  First, we put some baking soda in a small bowl.

Next, we added some dish soap to the bowl.

Our students voted between 2 different colors of food coloring.  The choice was a tie, so Grandma had to break it by voting for PINK.  We added the food coloring and some glitter.

Compare quantities to 3 using language, such as more, less, or the same, is math access point. Communicate preference for familiar objects or actions is a language access point.

 

 

 

 

 

We put the bowl in a carved out pumpkin (thank you to Cara’s son and daughter for creating the faces for the pumpkin).  We poured some vinegar in it and watched it erupt!

WAY COOL!!!!!

 

 

 

 

 

For our next experiment, we made some Monster Slime.

We started by putting 1/2 cup of glue in a bowl.  Then we added 1/2 cup of water to the glue.

We put in some slimy green food coloring and, of course, some glitter!  We made sure to stir it up really well.  We talked about how it was thin and watery.

Then we added the liquid starch.  When we began stirring it around, it almost instantly started firming up.  We transferred it to a plate so the students could see how it changed to a solid.

We added some googly eyes and voila!  Monster slime!

 

 

 

 

There were mixed reactions about it all around 🙂

 

 

 

 

 

Last, we made an Expanding Ghost.

We put some vinegar into an empty water bottle.  Then we put some baking soda into a balloon that had a ghost face on it.

Again, the math access point recognize when an object is added to a situation, is addressed.

 

 

 

 

We secured the balloon over the top of the bottle and then turned the balloon over so that the baking soda fell into the bottle.

WOW!!  The balloon got bigger as the reaction happened in the bottle.  Our students also got to feel the bottle which was COLD from the reaction.

So much spooky fun!

img_8423img_8074We have a paraprofessional and a student who hail from Minnesota so this week thought it would be fun to learn a little more about the state. This theme complements the Unique Curriculum unit our students are working on this month. The sensory groups explored boxes related to facts about Minnesota. The fine motor groups made art projects related to state symbols and the language group went shopping in our very own Owl Mart of America!

 

 

 

 

SENSORY GROUP

Some of the things we included were a Tonka truck (first built in Minnesota), pink and white lady slipper petals (the state flower), a book (the first children’s library was built in Minnesota), Peanuts characters (Charles Schulz is from there), and loon (state bird) calls recorded on a voice output device. There was also a little purse and play money to represent the Mall of America.

img_8856Our language group was a little bit different this week.  Since we were talking about the Mall of America, we decided to take a trip to our very own “Owl Mart of America” to do some shopping.  The Owl Mart is a little shop that was put together so that our Post Secondary students could have some vocational training.  Students are able to shop with “owl bucks” that they receive for good behavior.

img_6601img_6435This week we learned about some pioneers of space travel. Ashley, one of our fantastic volunteers, came up with the idea! This compliments the students Unique Curriculum unit for this month. The sensory boxes were related to different astronauts and space travel. The fine motor groups made space related art projects and the language group made a space themed snack.

img_6745img_6383Laika was the first dog who went to space! Found in her box were dog and bone shaped cookie cutters to press into some moon sand. Of course, we HAD to use our moon sand somewhere in this unit 🙂

img_6719img_5816Other animals also went into space. Albert II was the first monkey in space. The students had fun finding colorful monkeys hidden in our black “outer space” beans. The monkeys were fun to connect together and also fun to look at under a black light!

We gave our students a little of that experience with our “outer space” umbrella. There was a big moon, lots of stars, and a little space shuttle for them to look at.

img_5872img_6682Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the moon. In this box, we put in a little astronaut that our students could walk on a lunar landscape of grey Floam. They also enjoyed squishing and squeezing the Floam into various shapes!

img_6670img_6442Astronauts eat freeze dried food when they are in space.  We thought our red Bubber made a pretty good (although not edible) stand in for some strawberry ice cream that the astronauts might enjoy! On Tuesday our students took their cue from Neil Armstrong and left their footprints on the lunar surface—-well ok, a piece of grey paper 🙂

We made a “Midnight Blueberry Blast Smoothie” that was out of this world this week for our language group!

img_6833img_6832We started by getting out some milk and talking its temperature.  We found that it was COLD!  We put 1/2 a cup of milk into the blender.  Since it didn’t look like enough, we decided to double the amount of each of the ingredients so we put another 1/2 a cup in the blender.  We talked about how two 1/2 cups equals 1 cup!

The math access point recognize parts of whole objects is a math access point. The science access point distinguish between hot and cold objects is also addressed.

IMG_3225Happy 2016 everyone! To welcome the new year we thought it would be fun to take a look BACK at some things that happened in past “new” years.

Each of the sensory group boxes related to one of the historic events. The fine motor groups made art projects celebrating 2016 and the language group—-well they had a party 🙂

IMG_3035IMG_3170The marriage of Prince Ferdinand and Queen Isabella united the country of Spain. The red and yellow of this colorful box were a nod to the colors of the Spanish flag. In addition to sorting by color, the students were able to sort by texture since we included soft pompoms and hard beads.

Of course, the beads were also lots of fun to wear or shake 🙂

IMG_3165IMG_2790In 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed and in celebration of that historic event we made some red, white and blue play dough! We added snipped pieces of an old star garland and some glitter to give the play dough a patriotic sparkle 🙂

IMG_2827IMG_3012At the turn of the century, people were thrilled with the construction of the Statue of Liberty. We thought our green Bubber looked pretty similar to the color of the statue as we see it today.

Bubber’s texture is a little like circus peanut candy so it is drier than play dough but it still sticks together really well.

The little funnel and spoon made for lots of scooping fun and the students were especially fascinated as they watched the grains stream out the bottom. At the bottom of the box was a piece of paper with the numbers 1984—–written with neon markers, of course!

IMG_3139IMG_3033The psychedelic 1960’s rang out with the Woodstock concert held in the summer of 1969. In homage to the fashion of the day, we made some tie dye oobleck! Watching the colors swirl around was just GROOVY 🙂

Since lei’s are made from plumeria flowers we used that scent from Bath and Bodyworks for our water play scent this week. There was a “plumeria” blossom floating in the water and a bulb syringe to “water” it with.

On Tuesday the students decorated signs made from paper plates and popsicle sticks.

IMG_2886IMG_2919Then they painted the plate with GOLD paint—-this looked so cool!!! By having the students hold onto the popsicle stick handle we also addressed bilateral coordination with this activity.

The paper stuck easily to the paint so we didn’t  have to use glue!

On Wednesday we used the numbers 2016 again, but this time we put them on a SHIELD—-kind of like the one Henry VIII might have used!

IMG_3060We started by identifying the number 6 on a number line—-the students did a really great job with this!

Associate quantities with number names is a math access point.

 

 

 

 

 

IMG_3081IMG_3064Then we got out some BIG brushes and painted the shields with silver paint. Some of the students are still learning to use paint brushes but most of them  got to work without any help from us!

IMG_3095IMG_3110We used the Ellison machine to cut out the numbers 2-0-1-6 and the students placed them on their shields.

To make it easier to hold, a toilet paper roll was hot glued to the back of the shield by an adult, then…….

LANGUAGE GROUP

In our language group this week, we made some yummy cornbread. It is a traditional Southern food eaten for good luck because it’s supposed to resemble gold!

IMG_3186We started by counting out the cupcake liners while placing them in the cupcake tin.  We used a visual of the number 6 to help reinforce number recognition.

The math access point match one object to a designated space to show one-to-one correspondence is addressed here.

 

 

 

 

 

IMG_3191Then, we followed the directions on the Jiffy cornbread mix box and put all of the ingredients in a bowl.  We made sure to talk about the COLOR of the cornbread mix and also how it was DRY.  When we cracked the egg in, we talked about how the mixture was now WET.

Distinguish between items that are wet and items that are dry is a science access point.

 

 

 

 

 

IMG_3199IMG_3202When it was time to pour in the milk, noting that it was a LIQUID, our students got to feel the temperature—-it was COLD!

IMG_3240IMG_3234While we were waiting, we had a small New Years party of our own.  We got out party hats, boas, and princess crowns.  Our students then got to make some “fireworks” by walking or rolling over bubblewrap-IMG_3262                                                               —they had a BLAST!

Rainbow

IMG_7681It was all about COLOR with our rainbow theme this week! Our sensory boxes were so vibrant—just beautiful. Due to a special school activity our fine motor group only had one art project but it turned out pretty fabulous. Our language group had a blast making rainbow toast! All the students enjoyed Cara’s book, in each classroom we discussed the colorful objects on each page and looked around the room to find people wearing the different colors.

All our boxes addressed the science access point identifying objects by one observable property—-color 🙂

IMG_7489Individual items addressed the science access points applying a push or pull to move an object, tracking objects in motion, and recognizing common objects in the natural world through observation.

IMG_7545Purple Bubber filled this box. We have extolled the virtues of this stuff before but we can’t sing its praises enough. It’s so soft and squishy but dry—you just have to keep touching it!

We included a letter R (for rainbow) cookie cutter. While making letters the science access point applying a push to move an object is addressed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

IMG_7497It took a couple of hours to dye our pasta this nice vibrant orange but it was totally worth it. There was also a definite auditory component as the pasta trickled off fingers or was swirled around.

We included 3 orange items to find in the pasta. The items differed in size and shape from the pasta making it especially interesting to our students with visual impairments.

This box addresses both visual and tactile discrimination.

The science access point using senses to recognize objects is addressed here.

The math access point associating quantities with number names is also addressed.

 

 

 

IMG_7403We used dried split peas for our green box with a little scoop and also 3 green items to find—-including a Yoda figure which our students found pretty intriguing!

These peas feel so soft as fingers are run through them—very relaxing!

Responding to new vocabulary that is introduced is a language access point that can be addressed here. After all, it’s important that our students know their Star Wars characters 🙂

 

 

 

IMG_7594Finally, what do you get when you put all the colors together? A rainbow of course 🙂 We had to include our rainbow rice in this unit!

There were 3 letter R’s to find and a colorful rainbow picture taped to the bottom of the box.

IMG_7516We finished with Rain kissed Leaves lotion from Bath and Bodyworks—without rain you wouldn’t have any rainbows 🙂

A nice soft aroma and a fitting scent to remember  all the colorful fun we had!

Fine Motor Group

IMG_7708These book dividers were cast offs from the media center—-score! We hot glued them to some dollar store sponges to adapt them for our students. Sometimes it does pay to be a hoarder 🙂

We used them to make sponge painted rainbows seen on the Teaching 2 and 3 year olds blog.

 

 

IMG_7673First we counted out pieces of rectangular paper (counting all four sides) and then practiced writing our names.

Recognizing the sides of a rectangle and recognizing objects with 2 dimensional shapes are math access points.

We pressed our sponges onto the paint trays and then slid them across the paper.

Language Group

IMG_7603This week, we decided that it would be fun to make something edible—-food is always fun 🙂  Cara typed out directions for making rainbow bread, using a recipe found on food.com.

Recognizing the next step in a simple pattern or sequence of activities is a math access point.

 

 

 

 

 

 

IMG_7615We started out by pouring sweetened condensed milk into 6 clear plastic cups.  Then, we went around the table and the let students pick out which color they wanted to add to the milk using a color board made with Boardmaker symbols.  They used food coloring  to add the colors.  We discussed the fact that 2 colors were needed  to make purple or orange.

Effectively communicating information, wants, and needs using pictures, symbols, or gestures is a language access point addressed here.

 

 

 

IMG_7641Next, we mixed the colors into the sweetened condensed milk.  This was fun!  Each student got their own cup and watched how the colors changed.

The science access points applying a push or pull to move an object and recognizing a change in an object are addressed in this activity.

We counted out the bread and the plates.  The students then used the paintbrushes to “paint” the colors onto their bread.  The colors looked so vibrant on the bread!  Very cool.
